Seasteading Begins: led by cruise industry
I’m a big fan of Seasteading as an idea, but as I’ve written before, there are a lot of launch difficulties — it’s capital intensive, and operating expenses only really get reasonable at large scale. It’s a good steady-state thing at scale (maybe…it’s still unproven), but sucks as a startup.
The cruise industry is huge, and has the ships, and is good at innovative marketing (theme cruises, loyalty programs, etc.).
Starlink seems to be enabling a new thing from Virgin Voyages: a season pass designed for remote workers. https://www.virgin.com/about-virgin/latest/work-from-helm-with-virgin-voyages-new-scarlet-summer-season-pass
I’d personally be interested in this (although it’d be a lot more fun with a companion), particularly to see Southern Europe. It’s a 30% discount from regular fares, but at $5k/person/month, starts to get to a reasonable cost for a lot of people.
