Substack in 2024
I obviously didn’t maintain the “one post per day” goal in 2023. I think “daily substack posts for an entire year” was over-ambitious given full-time job as CSO at a fast growing startup, advising and investing a few others, a “busy travel schedule” (understatement), and while it worked out ok for the first few months (when I was mostly at home or near home), fell apart when I went to Japan for some conferences.
In 2024, I’m going to try again — this time, with “about one post per week”, and maybe accumulating a few drafts beforehand, rather than trying to write an entire post from scratch every day. Rather than “time box to 5-10 minutes and post”, which possibly is sustainable for daily posts, I always wanted to spend several hours. I may end up crossposting “content for work” (crypto, conferences, etc.) to both here and a work-hosted blog.
I do have a few books I’d like to work on (3, fairly distinct, with good coauthor for one, and a great publisher for two of them), as well as some long-form research reports for work (with research plus demo and presentation to assemble), but post-per-week is probably viable. Also trying for 104 books read this year, and listening to podcasts, improving my Spanish to at least B1 through live/zoom practice, a fair bit of personal and work related travel, and ideally getting back into snorkeling and SCUBA (easy here in PR…) as well as learning to sail. Probably not goals for 2024 alone but will try to make progress on them.
I think this is going to be a particularly busy/chaotic/monumental year (US elections, two major conflicts still going on, economic and regulatory uncertainty), although being in Puerto Rico buffers me from the extremes of most of this.
My big travel goal every year is “visit at least one place I haven’t been before”, as well as visiting perennial favorites (Japan, Czechia, Montreal). This year I already have one trip to a new place planned, and the biggest gaps (AU/NZ, Antarctica, Africa) are always possible.
